The project features a moving object and see-through fabrics hanging from the ceiling, with texts and photos printed on them. The main piece is a two-man saw, which represents the never-ending and difficult work of the artist’s grandfather, Ivan Antonovich Shchigalov. He was deported with his brother and mother from the Kharkiv region (Ukraine) to the Perm region (Russia) in 1931.
The texts printed on the fabrics are a fictional diary made up of stories from the artist’s uncle stories and the artist’s father’s memoirs. They recreate Ivan Antonovich’s experiences, how he had to adapt to life in a special settlement and how he fought to preserve human dignity and personal history.
